Grace & Speed: The Birds of Henri Gaudier-Brzeska
Kettle's Yard, Cambridge
This exhibition, curated collaboratively by Circuit Cambridge, explores artist Henri Gaudier-Brzeska’s constantly changing drawing styles through a selection of his sketches of birds. Over the course of three months, the group selected works from the collection at Kettle’s Yard that provide an insight into Gaudier-Brzeska’s evolving style – from a realistic and naturalistic depiction to abstract form, with heightened emphasis on the shapes created by the movement of the pen across the paper.
These drawings reflect the artist’s personality, his artistic development and the progression of the age. Gaudier-Brzeska aligned himself with the avant-garde Vorticist group in London. Many of its members responded to the increasing dominance of machines within their environment by trying to capture this movement within a static image.
Circuit Cambridge is the young people's programme at Wysing Arts Centre & Kettle's Yard. Circuit Cambridge is part of the national Circuit programme, led by Tate and funded by Paul Hamlyn Foundation. More information can be found here.
